Site Redesign

Out with the old, in with the new.

It’s been a while since I’ve given this site much attention. One of the adages about carpenters is that they typically have the least-repaired houses on the block. The same, I suppose, can be said about web designers in that their own site gets neglected as actual paying work takes precedence.

I have been a proponent of SVG (scaled vector graphics) in web design for some time, particularly as I’m an avid Adobe Illustrator user. This redesign -mostly on the front page – will make extensive use of it. ¬†SVG gives me the ability to output Illustrator output directly to the website without converting those graphics to into bitmaps. Those graphics can then be scaled without loss of resolution or animated through javascript. In this case, I’m using Snap.svg, a javascript code library, to manipulate the graphics.

Another major change to the site is that I’m building it on a WordPress backbone. I’ve scoffed at WordPress in the past. I figured that I could manage the content on my own simply by writing the appropriate HTML where needed. WordPress does have its advantages though. The plugins make for easy additions to site functionality. The content is managed through a simple WYSIWYG editor. Tags, categories, RSS feeds, SEO optimization, etc. are built in to the entire platform. There is something to be said for instant gratification versus days and weeks of programming toil and labor.

So the site will be a mess for a bit as I sort all the new stuff out. I’m excited by what I’ve got thus far and am looking forward to digging in and creating something really cool.
